10 Underwhelming Man Utd Signings Who Became Cult Heros

Red Devils the fans didn't really want but became legends.

The interim period between the termination of one Premier League season and the commencing of another may be perceived as being a long time, but for football supporters, the summer is filled with no less drama than the preceding nine months. With speculation rife that they will sign the 'world's next superstar', or that they might flog some of the deadwood which infuriated sections of the support in the past - we're looking at you Marouane Fellaini - it certainly never makes for a dull three months. It is for these reasons that supporters find their unrelenting dedication to the summer-long search for information worthwhile when the club repay them with a signing that whets their palatable appetite. At Manchester United, for instance, £59.7 million Argentine Angel di Maria currently has Red Devils supporters frothing at the mouth over his signature. But what happens when the support are inevitably not quite enamoured with the latest signing? By the law of averages, not every signing that puts to paper at Old Trafford will be an established top-class stalwart with medals and achievements galore. As a result, the supporters can be left feeling a little empty upon their arrival, with a muted atmosphere hanging over their transfer. One of the 'uninspiring' transfers even included a gangly 18 year old with a silly quiff and preposterous step-overs, signed as a replacement for the established and world-renowned David Beckham. Madness, surely? Take a look at the ten signings who initially underwhelmed sections of the Manchester United support, but eventually established themselves as cult heroes.
