The off-season is finally over and the pre-season friendlies are upon us. Newcastle United will get their friendly fixtures underway with a short trip across the River Tyne to near-neighbours Gateshead as they face the Conference side at the International Stadium on Friday night (8pm kick-off). Intriguingly, both sides head into the match with new managers/head coaches at the helm - as Steve McClaren and his coaching contingent oversee their first game since taking charge of the Magpies last month. Gateshead head into the match having undergone arguably an even bigger overhaul this summer, with former Sunderland boss Malcolm Crosby now in the dugout following Gary Mills' departure to Wrexham at the end of last season. What's more, chairman Graham Wood has relinquished control of the Conference club to new owners Richard and Julie Bennett, meaning a fresh structure is in place at "The Heed". But what can Newcastle fans expect to see from the Magpies when they visit Gateshead on Friday night? Having endured months - if not years - of turgid and unimaginative football under Alan Pardew and then John Carver, the Toon faithful want a clean break from all of that now and to see a the start of a new beginning this year.
