8 Classic Man Utd/Newcastle Old Trafford Encounters

It's not been NUFC's happiest away day, but there's been some cracking games nonetheless.

Manchester United vs Newcastle United. It's a game that, for Magpies supporters, has always been a special one in the footballing calendar. Admittedly Old Trafford has been one of the unhappiest away grounds for the travelling Toon Army - Newcastle have won there just once in 31 encounters since 1972 - but it is still a pilgrimage that Magpies supporters make in their thousands on a yearly basis. The fact that Newcastle have such a poor record in the red half of Manchester actually makes some supporters even more determined not to skip this clash - because they do not want to miss the rare occasions when they can be overjoyed at claiming victory there. Steve McClaren, Sir Alex Ferguson's former assistant boss at Man Utd, takes his Newcastle side back to Old Trafford on Saturday (12.45pm kick-off) still searching for his first win as Magpies head coach. An entertaining if frustrating 2-2 draw at home to Southampton was followed by a disappointing 2-0 loss at Swansea City, and Newcastle are under pressure to get a win at a ground where they are traditionally woeful. Louis van Gaal's Man Utd meanwhile have won both of their opening Barclays Premier League fixtures 1-0 - at home to Tottenham Hotspur and away to Aston Villa - and will look to continue that run against the Magpies. Here, WhatCulture.com/NUFC look at 8 classic encounters between Manchester United and Newcastle United at Old Trafford from the 1970s onwards (moving chronologically forward so the most-recent clash is listed last).
