Aleksandar Mitrovic Admits He Loves To "Fight" - And £12.3m Newcastle Signing Promises Goals

NUFC really have got themselves a character signed up here.

Aleksandar Mitrovic has admitted he loves to "fight" on the pitch - and has promised to score goals for the Magpies because "the box is the place I feel comfortable". The 20-year-old Serbian forward completed his £12.3 million move to Newcastle from Anderlecht on Tuesday and has signed a five-year deal with the club. Mitrovic himself has netted 44 goals in 90 matches for Anderlecht, but has a career total of 69 strikes from 158 games - and he has promised to deliver in the box for the Toon, as well as continuing his aggressive style on the playing field.
Speaking after signing, Mitrovic told NUFCTV:
"(I am) aggressive, strong and I don't know what more to say - goalscorer. "Yeah this is my position. I am a No 9 and the box is my place. I can say that this is my position. I feel the best in the box. I like the strikers who play before me here. Alan Shearer, Papiss (Cisse) - all the strikers are really good and I hope I can make something like this. "Alan Shearer is a real legend and one of my heroes. That and (Didier) Drogba is how I like to play and this is the style what I like, how I want to play and it's all to play at this club. "Yeah I like to fight and to score goals. Twenty-eight goals in total competitions (last season). Twenty goals in the league but 28 in all competitions. I think I can do better next season. "Heading - 14 or 15 goals heading. I like crosses in the box, I feel really comfortable. I like to be in the box."
The 13-cap Serbia international becomes the fourth most-expensive signing in Newcastle's history - and that will ensure pressure will be placed on his shoulders. However's Mitrovic is confident he can deal with that in the coming weeks and months. He continued:
"(The stadium) is really amazing. I really play all my career in a lot of stadium against teams but this stadium is so, so big, so nice so I can't wait for my first game there. "This is a club with a very big history. The club and the fans are really, really close and they are close with their players. I really like that. "I know how to play with pressure with the best clubs in Serbia and Belgium. I will have pressure for sure here but I like to play with pressure."
Georginio Wijnaldum (£14.5 million) was Newcastle's first signing of the summer but Mitrovic follows him to Tyneside in a move that shows a significant statement of intent by the Magpies. And Mitrovic revealed that Newcastle had been interested him for a "long time" - and even tried to sign him last season. His support for the club since he was a child and his desire to play in front of the Toon faithful finally swung the balance for him. He added:
"It was a really, really long few days for me because everyday I wait for what happen between the clubs and they have some problems between the clubs, small detail, but they finish and I am now here. "I am very happy, proud and excited really and I cannot wait to start the training with the team. "Yeah a long time (they have been interested in me). Last season also they ask for me and this season they show me they really want me and this is the reason why I come here. Also (for) a long time I am a fan of Newcastle and I follow Newcastle and I say I am proud to be here and for me I am very happy. "There were some other clubs but for me Newcastle is the best club to make progress, to play here and with these amazing fans and stadium also - it was really (an) amazing stadium and it's a really nice atmosphere from what I can see on the television so I cannot wait to play."
Mitrovic could make his Newcastle debut when the Magpies take on Sheffield United at Bramall Lane in a pre-season friendly on Sunday.
