Arsenal Transfers: 5 Reasons Wenger Must Buy Wanyama

5. He€™s A Defensive Midfielder

Victor Wanyama Arsene Wenger may think he doesn€™t need one, but the truth is Arsenal are missing a defensive midfielder, and you could argue they have been lacking one for a while. Alex Song€™s transfer to Barcelona appeared to slip under the radar while Gunners fans wondered what would happen with Van Persie, but even when he was at Arsenal there were still questions over whether Wenger needed another defensive midfielder. Since the Cameroonian€™s departure, Mikel Arteta has acted as the midfield pivot but he lacks the defensive nous or reading of the game, as well as the stature and physicality to provide a real shield to the defence. While Arsenal€™s defence was largely culpable for Tottenham€™s two goals in the derby, the lack of cover in front of the defence nor any pressure on the man with the ball was also to blame, and Wanyama would address this problem. The Celtic destroyer has the engine to get up and down the pitch, is not shy of getting stuck in, plus has experience of the rough and tumble of the Scottish Premier League. While he may be a little rough round the edges he would bring a lot that Arsenal are lacking, primarily some bite in midfield, and Wenger can be trusted to smooth out the rest.
