When transfer deadline day approached toward the end of last week, very few could have predicted what was about to happen.

Peter Odemwingie making the two hour and nine minute drive from the West Midlands to London, only to discover that his proposed move from West Brom to QPR had fallen through in the eleventh hour made headlines that day, as did a former Manchester United player who has been out of work since December.

Yes, I am talking about David Beckham, the former Real Madrid and AC Milan midfielder who swapped competing for major honours in Europe with spending the last six years of his career plying his trade in the obscurity of America’s MLS league.

His arrival at the Parc des Princes came as a massive surprise and was one of the “biggest deals” of transfer deadline day. When Golden Balls later pledged his PSG salary to a children’s charity, he melted the hearts of many who heralded him as a “stand up bloke” and “a pretty nice chap” (I imagine).

But is there more to his move to the mega-rich French money-bags than meets the eye?

I believe there is. I believe his move is nothing more than one big fat marketing ploy, and here’s why.
