Dick Advocaat allegedly claimed he was offered the Newcastle United job only to turn it down before taking over their North East rivals Sunderland. The Dutchman, who lost just three of his nine games in charge to steer The Blackcats to an unlikely Premier League survival last season, was speaking on television in his homeland about his time at the Stadium of Light and allegedly mentioned he was offered The Magpies' head coach's job. We have no idea when he was offered the job, or if he even mentioned it at all in his interview. Newcastle were reported to have spoken to a number of possible replacements before ultimately settling for Pardew's former assistant, John Carver. If Dick was indeed approached, then it certainly went under the radar as quite literally no one reported it. Then again, this could just be another move to get him deeper into the hearts of the Sunderland faithful. It certainly fits the bill when you remember his tears on the touchline at Arsenal and how he claimed to love the club despite only taking charge half way through March. One thing is for sure is that Newcastle would have been nowhere near the relegation dogfight they found themselves in come the end of the season if Advocaat had taken charge.
