Man Utd Transfers: 5 Key Signings To Win 21st Premier League Title Next Year

5. Leighton Baines

leighton baines One area of the pitch that Ferguson needs to address ahead of the new season is at left back. Veteran Patrice Evra cannot continue forever and at 31 there are already signs that his performances are beginning to wane at Old Trafford. This season, his positioning has at times been erratic and the once reliable fullback can no longer be completely trusted. United were leaking goals in the first half of the season and by January had already racked up their worst defensive record in 11 years. In the first 19 games of the campaign, the Reds conceded 28 goals, which works at an average of 1.47 per match. Though it would be unfair (and unwise) to blame Evra completely for this defensive slump, he was undeniably a contributing factor to it. United have been linked with Everton's Leighton Baines recently, and the Toffees fullback has been one of their standout players this season. Baines does everything Evra used to do so well on such a regular basis - he contributes to the attack, tracks back, provides goal scoring opportunities and is a fantastic tackler of the ball. Arguably one of the best players in his position this season, he would be a superb replacement for the veteran Evra.
