With the January window now well closed, and Sir Alex only bringing in Wilfried Zaha from Crystal Palace, attention will now turn to the summer window, and how the United boss might strengthen his team when the window opens.
By then the United team might well have been crowned champions again, considering their current 12 point lead at the top of the table over neighbours Manchester City, but that doesn’t mean United don’t need to strengthen. The sign of a good coach – and one of Sir Alex’s chief defining characteristics – is the ability to rebuild teams to greatness once more, and with Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes heading to their end of their careers, and Rio Ferdinand possibly not too far behind them, Sir Alex will have to do so once more to turn this season’s successes into something long-term once more.
So with that in mind here are the six players Sir Alex should consider bringing in this summer to strengthen…
6. Luka Modric
- Club: Real Madrid
After his big money move to Madrid from Tottenham, the Croatian could have been forgiven for thinking he would be one of the team’s new starting Galacticos, but it hasn’t quite worked out like that so far.
Modric’s first six months in Madrid have been a disappointment for the playmaker to thrive in Jose Mourinho’s system, and he has been linked with a summer move to Old Trafford by the Sunday Mirror (via the Daily Mail). Quite how much of the £33million they paid for him they will make back remains to be seen, but given Modric’s form, and the comparative lack of game time he is getting, it surely won’t be that high.
Modric would be a better immediate option than United’s Shinji Kagawa, who might find himself forced out of the team if the Croatian signs, but really, United need to replace Paul Scholes better than they have done so far, and with Robert Lewandowski apparently moving to Bayern Munich in the summer, Sir Alex needs another option.

I reckon they will bid for Baines, Fellani, Strootman and Begavic. The most likely out of them to join will be Baines and Begavic. I think Fellani will go Chelsea and Strootman will either stay or go somewhere else but not to England.
Strootman would be a really interesting signing and I think it would be good for them to take a chance on an ‘unknown’ player. Strootman looks classy and would give creativity to the central midfield.
Would love to see Baines and Stootman at United. As crazy as it sound wouldn’t want Modric though.
fellaini plays behind the striker we already have kagawa for that, imo strootman , baines and rodriguez of porto is all what united need
i think we nid baines & lewandoksi wachana na modric vile tuliacha sneider.
We need Baines,Strootman and Rodriquez also a central defender like Hummels. We have problems in the midfield therefore a good holdin midfielder will be good for the team,am tired of watching my team being overun in the midfield. We also need midfielders with eyes for goal lyk da lilkes of Juan Mata of Chelsea n David Silva for City.
