Newcastle 3-4 Portland Timbers 2 – NUFC Match Ratings

Missing: Papiss Cisse, 30, last seen in the warm-up before NUFC lost to Portland...

Despite a spirited fight back from Rolando Aarons, and no one else in a black-and-white shirt, Newcastle United lost their second game of three on their tour of America to Portland Timbers' reserve side. The Magpies, who found themselves 4-1 down mid-way through the second-half, had their wing wizard to thank for making the final scoreline of 4-3 look more respectable for the Premier League side. If Steve McClaren didn€™t know what Newcastle United€™s biggest problem defensively has been for the past few seasons, then he certainly does now. Set-pieces have been a shambles both offensively and defensively for the Magpies for years - and playing a back four with only one recognised centre-back in it certainly didn€™t help matters. United, rather miraculously considering the way the rest of the game turned out, found themselves ahead as Georginio Wijnaldum, on a brighter note, took just six minutes of his full Newcastle debut to score and put the tourists ahead, However, those defensive frailties, coupled with familiar frustrations in attack, saw United 3-1 down by half-time before Gael Bigirimana found himself lost at sea which allowed the home side to notch their final goal of the game. Here's how the lads fared on the night, and it doesn't make for pretty reading for some...
