Newcastle Midfielder "On Brink" Of Leaving Club

Abeid's move to Fortuna Düsseldorf is close to being completed.

Newcastle United midfielder Mehdi Abeid is in on the "brink" of joining Fortuna Düsseldorf after heading to Germany for talks with the Bundesliga 2 side. Although Abeid found himself on the Magpies' bench for the 1-0 loss to Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday but did not come on - and now it looks like he will leave Tyneside, according to the Shields Gazette. Last week, France Football claimed the Algeria international was in "advanced talks" with the German side and it now looks likely he will move on to pastures new.

Earlier this summer, Abeid was linked with a permanent return to Greek club Panathinaikos - the side he spent the 2013-14 campaign on loan at - but The Chronicle claim they were unwilling to meet Newcastle€™s asking price. Yet France Football reported that "ambitious" Fortuna do not have a problem paying the fee the Magpies want for Abeid and that the midfielder looks likely to move to the Bundesliga 2. The midfielder impressed during his time at Panathinaikos, scoring 10 goals in 38 appearances and helping them claim the Greek Cup in 2013-14, and the Greek club want to add greater strength to their squad for this season - but it looks like Abeid will head to Fortuna instead. Last season, Abeid played 16 times for the Magpies - including on 13 occasions in the Premier League - but McClaren€™s arrival seems to have put an end to his Newcastle United career.
