Newcastle Striker Papiss Cisse Ruled Out Until September After Broken Kneecap Surgery

Newcastle will be required to accelerate their hunt for striking reinforcements this summer with Papiss Cisse expected to be out until September after undergoing surgery on a broken kneecap.

The Toon number nine was injured during the 2-1 defeat to Swansea at St James' Park on 19 April and travelled to Paris yesterday for an operation. He will then convalesce at the Clairefontaine Medical Centre before returning to Tyneside where he will be assessed by the club's medical staff.

The prognosis is that Cisse will be absent for 3-4 months meaning he will miss our entire pre-season programme and possibly the start of the new Premier League season which kicks off in August.

€œNewcastle United can confirm that striker Papiss Cisse underwent an operation on a fractured patella on Thursday," the club said in a statement today.

€œHe is expected to be sidelined for a number of months.€

Cisse's extended lay-off should hasten the need for Mike Ashley to bolster Newcastle's threadbare forward department with the 28-year-old set to be the only senior striker present at the club once Loic Remy returns to QPR at the expiration of his loan deal.

A deal for Luuk De Jong has been mooted despite the Holland international's minimal impact since arriving on loan from FC Twente, while Lyon attacker Alexandre Lacazette is reported to be the club's primary target according to the Journal.
