Newcastle Transfer News: Magpies Target Brighton Top Scorer

And he's a centre-back...

Newcastle United are finally looking to add goals to their defence - by targeting Brighton & Hove Albion's top-scorer Lewis Dunk. The 23-year-old might be a centre-back but he scored seven goals for the Seagulls last season, two better than former Magpies winger Kazenga LuaLua. Valued at £5 million, The Daily Mirror reports that Newcastle's new head coach Steve McClaren will look to recruit the Brighton centre-back in order to bolster his side's defence - although Everton, West Ham United and West Bromwich Albion are also chasing Dunk's signature.
The Magpies have made it clear that they will alter their transfer policy this summer in order to bring in a greater proportion of British talent, and the 6ft 4in Englishman would certainly fit the bill. Dunk made 43 appearances in all competitions and netted seven times, and he is also a former member of England's Under-21 squad - although he never actually made an appearance for the Young Lions. To date, Dunk has made 111 career appearances for both Brighton and while on loan at Bristol City and has netted seven times - all of which came last season for the Seagulls.
