Newcastle United have today confirmed the club’s squad numbers for the coming season, allowing fans to get their brand new black and white home kits emblazoned with their favourite players and numbers in time for kick-off against Andre Villas-Boas’ Tottenham Hotspur at St. James’ Park a week on Saturday.
Dutch ‘keeper Tim Krul has been handed the number 1 jersey as expected after an exceptional season last year, while new signing Vurnon Anita has landed the number 8 shirt, with fellow new signings Gael Bigirimana, Romain Amalfitano and Curtis Good picking up the 10, 17 and 33 shirts respectively.
Meanwhile there’s no allocated numbers for either Xisco or Nile Ranger, and youngsters Adam Campbell, Michael Richardson and Remie Streete also miss out.
The rest of the squad remains mostly the same from last season, with the iconic number 9 shirt given once more to Papiss Cisse and compatriot Demba Ba again handed the number 19. According to the club Cisse’s 9 and Hatem Ben Arfa’s number 10 shirts have been the numbers of choice with supporters looking to get their replica shirts emblazoned with the numbers of their Toon favourites.

Alan Pardew’s men enjoyed a strong pre-season, albeit apart from the opening defeat at the hands of German lower-league side Chemnitzer and a poor showing in the final game against Cardiff City, with the manager trying out as many new and fringe players as possible before the Magpies head into a long and arduous season, including a return to European competition.
Newcastle will line-up against Spurs for a 5.30pm kick-off on Saturday 18th August, live on ESPN.
