Newcastle United Transfer News: Chelsea's Paulo Ferreira is Debuchy Alternative?

Newcastle United will turn to veteran Chelsea right-back Paulo Ferreira should their attempts to sign Lille defender Mathieu Debuchy fall through.

Newcastle United will turn to veteran Chelsea right-back Paulo Ferreira should their attempts to sign Lille defender Mathieu Debuchy fall through, according to Caught Offside. The Magpies are expected to make an increased final offer of £7 million for the 26-year-old French international defender who has won many plaudits for his performances at Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine. He has been one of the stars in a disappointing French campaign and has won many potential suitors across Europe which has convinced Lille to increase the asking price on the player after initially turning down Newcastle's original £4 million offer. Debuchy is a good friend of Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye and the North East club do look in pole position to sign the player but with Chelsea having just entered the race for his signature and with the European Champions able to offer higher wages and Champions League football, The Geordies may have to end up looking elsewhere. Chelsea are interested in Debuchy becoming a direct replacement for the departed Jose Bosingwa, whilst Newcastle see him as a player on a higher level than Danny Simpson who wants a pay increase on his wages that United won't match and are currently looking to offload. If Debuchy does sign for Chelsea, it is reported that Newcastle will nab Ferreira on a nominal fee/free transfer as a number option for Newcastle. Former Portugese international Ferrira, who was Jose Mourinho's trusty first signing from his former club Porto, has played over 200 league games for Chelsea but is likely to be used sparingly at Stamford Bridge next season and he believes he may get more games at St. James' Park with Alan Pardew believing he still has something to give at the highest level.
