Premier League: 3 Biggest Disasters Of The Season So Far

2. The Managerial Merry-Go-Round At Chelsea Spins Again

After claiming the much desired Champions League trophy for Chelsea last May, Roberto Di Matteo was rewarded with a 2 year contract for his efforts and we all believed that Chelsea had now found a manager that would be given time to build a squad and achieve success. That was no doubt helped when the season began well, and at the end of October Chelsea found themselves at the top of the Premier League table. But then November was a much different story: having failed to win in 4 consecutive Premier League games and finding themselves 4 points adrift of Manchester United at the top of the table, Roman Abramovich wielded the now infamous axe and Di Matteo was dismissed as Chelsea Manager on the 21st of November. That same day Chelsea announced the appointment of ex Liverpool & Inter Milan manager Rafa Benitez as their interim head coach until the end of the season, a decision which was far from popular among the Chelsea faithful, and nor does it appear to have paid off. Chelsea now find themselves knocked out of the Champions League and in 3rd position in the Premier League, a massive 16 points behind leaders Manchester United and only 1 point ahead of Tottenham Hotspur. With the €˜Benitez Out€™ posters being waved at every home game it seems that Chelsea have again been the creators of their own downfall by refusing their managers any long term support, a mentality which will never bring stable success. Abramovich either has to change the way he runs the club or face seeing Chelsea drop behind both Manchester clubs and usurped by the ever improving Tottenham Hotspur.
