Toon Fans Reveal Exactly Who They Want To Be Newcastle Captain For 2015-16

Newcastle United fans have sent a clear message to head coach Steve McClaren about who they want to be the Magpies captain for the 2015-16 season - and it is not Fabricio Coloccini. Instead, the Toon faithful overwhelmingly elected Daryl Janmaat to be the next skipper, with more than a third of respondents to a whatculture.com/nufc poll choosing the Dutch right-back, with Jack Colback second. In fact, Coloccini only came in fifth out of just six entries in the poll, with new £14.5 million signing Georginio Wijnaldum third and Siem de Jong fourth.

Janmaat was considered by many Newcastle fans to be the club's standout performer in an otherwise shambolic 2014-15 campaign, with the right-back attacking well and doing a sterling job in an extremely average defensive unit. And that appreciation seems to have passed over into the WhatCultureNUFC poll, with 36% (554 votes) of the 1,530 respondents opting for Janmaat as the next Toon captain. Geordie Colback, who joined the club on a free transfer from bitter rivals Sunderland last summer, has been handed the captain's armband for the first two pre-season matches in Coloccini's absence and he came in second with 28% (434 votes). New signing Wijnaldum, who skippered PSV Eindhoven to the Eredivisie title last season, came in third despite having never previously played in the Premier League before with 11% (172 votes), narrowly pipping De Jong (165 votes) to that position. The fourth Dutchman on the list, Tim Krul, was backed by 4% of fans (67 votes), while "other" - as in any player not previously listed - received 2% (25 votes). Newcastle United supporters have spoken, and they have overwhelmingly opted against incumbent Coloccini retaining the captain's armband following his terrible leadership during the disastrous 2014-15 campaign. Will head coach McClaren listen to the will of the Toon faithful? Or will he stick with the Argentine centre-back as skipper?
