World Cup: What Might England's 2022 Line-up Look Like?

England may have booked their place at the 2014 World Cup with a pair of surprisingly impressive wins against Montenegro and Poland, but already any optimism they might have about the tournament itself is being tempered by a sensible amount of caution. Realistically England have very little chance of returning from Brazil in the summer as World Champions. The FA and its chairman, Greg Dyke, have accepted that England won't win next year, setting their sights instead on triumph in the already controversial Qatar 2022. Whether it ends up being played in summer or winter, is the 2022 World Cup a realistic target? And how might England line up nine years from now? The following is a possible starting 11 for England's opener in Qatar. Would this team have what it takes to beat the best? Goalkeeper - Joe Hart
Age in 2022: 35 Currently: Manchester City, 37 England caps Right now experiencing an error strewn run of bad form that has lead many, not least this writer, to suggest giving another keeper a chance, Hart remains the most likely possibility between the sticks in 2022. Assuming that he, for one reason or another, gets over his current propensity for gaffes in big games, Hart will potentially emerge a stronger player. He remains the most talented English goalkeeper in a generation and, in goalie terms, is still relatively young at 26. Unlike outfield players most keepers don't really hit their peak in terms of reliability and consistency until at least 30, while many may go on playing at the top level until almost 40. Peter Shilton, for example, made his club debut at Leicester deputising for England goalkeeper Gordon Banks just before the 66 World Cup. He was England's undisputed number 1 24 years later at Italia 90. The probability is, therefore, that Hart's best may be yet to come and 2022 could see him as an experienced, consistent world class star. Other possible contenders: Fraser Forster (age 34 in 2022), Jack Butland (29 in 2022), Jordan Pickford (28 in 2022) If Hart's poor form does turn into a long term thing then Celtic's highly rated Forster, just a year younger, is likely to fight for his place over the course of the next decade. Butland, meanwhile, has already made his England debut, the youngest goalkeeper ever to do so. His performances for Birmingham in the Championship last season marked him out as one to watch and secured a move to Stoke.
