Okay, we all know by now about the Star Trek flip phone, and our constant on/off relationship with the hoverboard, but science fiction's ability to predict the future goes much further than Marty McFly's self lacing shoes (although they were damn cool, to be fair).

Because of everyone's fixation on lightsabers (again, perfectly understandable), not many people know that people were predicting technology that we're just getting to grips with today as far back as the 1800s. Not in a "one day everyone will have a personal flying car and dress from head to toe in latex" cutesy old-school futurism kind of way, but using proper science to foresee the future of space travel, artificial intelligence, robotics and much more.

I won't patronise you with the "did you know that Star Trek invented the touch screen?" spiel, we've heard that one too many times before. Instead, we'll kick things a bit old school and get into the classics, including a guest appearance from the father of science fiction himself, H. G. Wells.

The best part is that it can give us hope for all of the amazing predictions being made by scientists and writers alike about the shape of the future.
