10 Abandoned Game Of Thrones Plot Threads We Really Miss

Shouldn't a death-defying wizard warrior be more important?!

With season 5 in Westeros heading towards its finale, HBO have done a pretty good job condensing storylines in an efficient way this time out. The show is just giving the audience what’s important, cutting out some excess book material and saving some characters’ storylines for next season. We’re also seeing a lot of plots intersect, like with Brienne, Podrick, Sansa and Littlefinger all ending up in the same place.

But as with any show as complex and multi-stranded as Game Of Thrones, things can get pretty complicated.

With only ten episodes a season, it’s inevitable that some things will have to be abandoned every year, but there are plenty of pretty significant plot threads that we haven’t seen or heard of this season whatsoever. In fact, many of these haven’t been addressed in several seasons, and that makes it seriously questionable whether the show will ever get back to them or if it's simply moved on.

Is Gendry still sailing along in his row boat? Did we all just forget about Beric Dondarrion, the dude who can literally come back from the dead? What about Blackfish? Will fans ever get updates on their stories?

The world of Game of Thrones is pretty huge, and so it's hard to fault the show for not being able to fully explore all of it every season. But here are 10 plot threads from throughout the show that fans miss and which need to be returned to as soon as possible...

10. The Iron Islands

Remember the Greyjoys, especially Theon’s sister Yara? In the third season finale, Yara gave a pretty exciting speech about how she was going to rescue her brother from the Boltons and bring him home. Hell yes! Then in Season 4, after six episodes, Yara finally reaches him, only for him to have been so beaten down by Ramsay that he denies he’s Theon Greyjoy.

Yara leaves, claiming her brother is dead, and then we never hear from her again.

Where is she? Where are the rest of the Greyjoys? The Iron Islands are a pretty significant part of Westeros, but in Season 5, they’ve been completely absent.

It’s also important to note that in Season 3, Melisandre cast a spell calling for the death of three kings: Robb Stark, Joffrey Baratheon and Balon Greyjoy. We all know what happened to the first two, but is Balon still alive? Is that part of the spell just taking longer?

In the fourth book, A Feast For Crows, there is actually a pretty significant Iron Islands storyline, but that has been entirely cut from this season. That might make sense in terms of efficiency, but it certainly does feel a little odd to have that entire part of Westeros completely abandoned for a season and a half.
