One of the sweetest things about the show is the relationship between Cameron, Mitchell, and their adoptive-Vietnamese daughter Lily. Gay Adoption is sadly only a slightly less contentious issue than Gay Marriage, although attitudes have thankfully changed in recent years. It's a great portrayal of the highs and lows of adopting as a gay couple, and Lily allows Cameron and Mitchell to be viewed as more than just in a typical 'Gay Uncle' way. There's nearly 100,000 households where Same-Sex couples have children, but of those nearly 73% have their biological children only. A lot of people discover or become comfortable with their orientation later in life, when they already have children and a good portion of same-sex couples are bisexual. In the show, not only do Cam and Mitchell adopt, but other members of the LGBT community are shown to have adopted as well, but there is a conspicuous lack of same-sex couples having biological children. You could argue that with Modern Family being set in California, being the state where the vast majority of children adopted by same-sex parents are, that the prevalence of gay adoption makes sense, but even so California is an exception in this regard.
