10 Ways Modern Family Is Not Like Modern Families

4. Women Still Struggle With Balancing Kids And Career

Claire Dunphy is an exceptional woman. In season 7 she gets named the next CEO of Jay's wardrobe company, the one that she's worked 60 hour weeks at for years. This alone is an exceptional feat, but the fact that she's done this whilst raising three children and having a husband that works as well is truly astounding. A world where women can both have a family and be successful in the business world has been something that a lot of people have fought for over the years, and Modern Family's portrayal of this 'have it all' woman treats it as entirely ordinary. It's a reality that a lot of women still struggle with balancing family and career. Without getting into debate about whether women should try and 'have it all', or even whether it's possible at all, 51% of working mothers say their family makes it more difficult to advance in their career. Generally speaking, there is still a stronger expectation for women to become house-spouses, and give up their career for the sake of their family than there is for men, even if the woman is the higher earner.
