After a supremely successful second season, it goes without saying that we’re excited for the next installment of Game of Thrones. Here’s 5 Things We Want To See in the forthcoming third season.
Please Note: I will NOT be spoiling any plot points from the books. This article will only address information given to us on the TV show.
5. More Than 10 Episodes Per Season
The first two seasons of the best fantasy series on TV each had 10 episodes. The majority of shows today have around twenty episodes per season, twice as many as Game of Thrones. Imagine the stories that could be told with twice as much time to tell them. The two most common complaints, ”They didn’t include that bit from the book!” and “It feels rushed and all over place.” could be addressed without compromising the pace and depth.
However, HBO have a habit of keeping their seasons to around 12 episodes (True Blood & Boardwalk Empire being the most current examples) so seeing such an enormous expansion is unlikely. That addition of 2 more episodes per season would certainly still give extra breathing time for the characters and storylines though.
Due to the length of A Storm of Swords (the third and longest novel in the series so far), HBO has decided to split it in to 2 seasons, so in some ways, this point has already been confirmed!

I think Joffrey’s a really underrated character from the series. I thought he was really good in the second series, his ruthlessness, unpredictablity and sadistic streak really made him quite interesting. After the first series I thought he was just going to remain like a little weasel, but I was pretty surprised how entertaining he became (whilst his cowardly weasel-ness still remained when the going got tough).
He was certainly more interesting than Jon Snow anyway, the beyond the wall story really didn’t grab me this series at all…nowhere near as interesting as the Lannisters in Kings Landing.
I agree about Joffrey, he’s definitely a compelling character. Jack Gleeson’s performance is brilliant.
You have to admit that he’s certainly not a likable guy though!
Well, as a person who’s read the books, I can say that, with the introduction of Mance, things are going to get a lot more exciting North of The Wall.
Thanks for the comment and feedback Curtis.
They’ve already announced only 10 episodes for Season 3.
Yep, like I said in the post, they’ve announced 10 for Season 3 for the first half of A Storm of Swords and 10 episodes for Season 4 for the second half of A Storm of Swords.
I would like to see some extra episodes though, I feel 10 episodes is a bit restriction.
Stenly Baratheon = fail
Great list! Small typo I noticed, though: you wrote Stenly instead of Renly Baratheon. ;)
Hahaha, damn it! That was a seriously stupid typo. I actually quite like the name Stenly though.
Plus, I’m not entirely to blame, it made it past my editor too :P
i hate joffrey but i love to have a character i hate. killing off a widely hated baddie destroys all the tension that runs through a show. let him live :P. agree with the rest of what you wrote though :D
Thanks very much Leah! Yeah, that’s a very good point. But it’s not like Joffrey is the only evil character, there are plenty of other people who you could learn to love to hate ;)
yeah i seriously hate jeoffery…..
Jon joins Mance but then rejoins the Watch when the wildlings storm the wall. Ygritte is killed in the attack (but not before she and Jon have sex). Later Jon makes a pact with the surviving wildlings. Tyrion is betrothed to Sansa and poisons Joffrey. Joffrey dies. Also, Tyrion strangles and kills Shae and kills Tywin via crossbow to the belly. Oh and Robb is betrayed by the Freys because he married the other girl. Arya joins the faceless men.
Fortunately for those avoiding spoilers not all of the above is correct. But not gonna tell you which bits. Ha!
Tom, you are a bastard. There’s no need to try to put spoilers on a post purposefully avoiding spoilers.
I want to Joffrey Bereathoen sorry Joffrey Lannister DEAD.
I just love the love story that forms at the end of season 2, between Ygritte and Jon snow,
One thing I’d like to see is no third season. I really can’t see why this show is popular – poorly cast, bad acting (even from people, like Peter Dinklage, who were very good in other things), poor production values (it looks like an episode of Xena: Warrior Princess), and too much deviation from the books (mainly putting in more sex than was in the books – which wouldn’t necessarily be bad except they adhere to the standard rule of “breasts are okay, snatch isn’t” and, while I don’t really want to see full frontal from dudes – fair’s fair.
Peter Dinklage being bad?! Are you insane, sir? I couldn’t disagree more. He just won an Emmy for gawd’s sake!
The acting, for the most part, is top notch. The production values are pretty bloody good for their budget (the wildfire explosion was awesome).
Yeah they should definitely be more focused episodes. Must get to reading Book 3 soon…. I’ve heard great things.
I’m glad you agree, man. Absolutely get back on with the books, they get a WHOLE lot more interesting.
I found the second one gripping but a lot more plodding than the incredible first edition but still very much looking forward to reading the third.
i thaugt the army we saw at the end were walking dead and not the wildlung army> ive never read the book sso i dont know if those to are connected or something
They are two totally different things, you’re right. Jon Snow saw the Wildling army at the end (the shot that’s featured in the article) and Sam and the other Night’s Watch Men saw the White Walker army (zombies etc) at The Wall.
Small correction, the White Walkers are attacking the Fist of the First Men where the Night’s Watch is stationed beyond the Wall waiting for Jon to come back. Not the Wall itself.
10 Episodes is indeed limited, but I think this makes the writers think long and hard as to what is essential and helps to avoid bloat. I don’t know how much it costs to make this series, but it cannot be cheap. Does HBO make enough on this series? Also, in the old days (50′s 60′s) a full season was like 39 episodes.
