Over the years, there have been a lot of sitcoms featuring a huge and diverse cast of different characters – it’s why we love them and why we’re willing to give even the most ridiculous of sitcom pitches the time of day. Some deal with family life such as the stress of children, wives or overbearing mother in laws, while others focus on the trials of everyday life and dealing with them as best you can with a group of friends.
Whatever the set-up, a sitcom lives and dies on the strength of its characters: it’s not enough for the situation to be funny, it has to have a funny effect on a character that we care about – whether positively or negatively enough to get a rise. That’s why in every sitcom we see the same character types – the fool, the sluttier girl, the idiot, the hunk – in some form they are all ever-present.
Throughout all the sitcoms over the years there have been some truly memorable faces that a lot of us can ultimately relate to in some shape or form. We laugh with them, we cry with them… but mostly we just laugh.
Here is my list of the 40 Greatest Sitcom Characters of all time. Hold tight for some controversy…
50. Fez – That 70′s Show
The stereotypical “foreign exchange student” of the group whose country of origin was one of the series’ running gags.
He constantly makes advances on the girls in the group, often being rejected in the process. However during series eight he became something of a ladies’ man.
49. Vyvyan – The Young Ones
Vyvyan is a psychopathic, punk medical student who often displays feats of superhuman strength, such as being decapitated yet managing to reattach his own head.
He often causes havoc such as when he wires the doorbell to a bomb to “pep it up a bit.” Interestingly enough though he is the only member of the group to own a car- a yellow Ford Anglia with flames painted up the sides.
48. Caroline Todd- Green Wing
The first episode of the first series sees Caroline arriving for her first day at the hospital after spending all night locked in her car.
She is seen as one of the more awkward characters in the show and is constantly embarrassed by her colleagues or more often than not by her own bad luck. This has led her to being one of the most popular characters on the show.
47. Geraldine Granger- The Vicar of Dibley
Dawn French turns up as Geraldine Granger- as the new vicar of a rural town called Dibley after the Church of England allowed female vicars.
Her character was based off one of the first female vicars of the time and had many qualities that made her a memorable characters- such as her love of chocolate and her unusual first name- Boadicea.
46. Francis Mulcahy- M*A*S*H
A priest serving in the Korean War with the rest of his unit and is one of the more quirky characters of the series.
He often refers to his sister who joined a nunnery as “my sister the Sister.” We learn that he is an avid boxing fan and actually pretty good at the sport himself after an old Priest at Jesuit school taught him and the rest of his class. He also indulged in some un-priestly behavior such as gambling and drinking.

I’m not sure what I hated most about this article. The order in which you placed the characters? The poor, uninteresting writing style? The lack of explanation in to what gained them their place on the list or why they were chosen over other characters in the show? It’s hard to say.
Dear oh dear oh dear oh dear. Characters from How I Met Your Mother and Big Bang Theory? Not an Alan Partridge/David Brent/Charlie from It’s Always Sunny/Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys in sight?
Tobias and Gob are superior to George Michael Bluth. If we are going for simple minded side kicks then Fr Dougal is head and shoulders above that unfunny specimen Randy in My Name is Earl.
I could go on but I must eat.
More of a list of the goofy or stupid comic relief sidekicks than the best characters ever for the most part (Fez, Kramer, Joey etc.) Id definitely have had David Brent, Alan Partridge, Malcolm Tucker from Thick of It, Jeremy or Superhans from Peep Show It in there too.
The top five is fine though, apart from Barney. He’s not in their league.
Decent list, although I do agree with an above post, you haven’t had characters such from shows such as Peep show but you have The Big Bang Theory? Bit odd.
No Louie? Liz Lemon, Joey and Kramer deserve higher spots and almost every character on Arrested Development is funnier than George Michael
Where is Al Bundy???
The mundanity of this article is only matched by the stupidity in choosing characters.
There is no Charlie from It’s Always Sunny, no GOB/Tobias from Arrested Development, no Chandler Bing from Friends… And the list goes on…
Off the top of my head I can think of at least 5 glaring ommissions
George Costanza (Seinfeld)
Hal (Malcolm in the Middle)
Michael Scott (The Office)
Jez (Peep Show)
David Brent (The Office)
It just seems like you could only think of 50 and then hit “Random” for their order.
It’s all a matter of opinion at the end of the day. It was all about trying to find a mix of old/new and British/American that would appeal to a good mix of people.
yeah so where is blackadder?
RUBBISH THE CAT IS A CAT BUT A SPECIES THAT EVOLVED OVER 3 million years, NOT FROM A RADIATION LEAK!!!
This list is complete rubbish. Not one mention of any of the following.
Cliff Huxtable (The Cosby Show)
Claire Huxtable (The Cosby Show)
Steve Urkel (Family Matters)
Danny Tanner (Full House)
Michelle Tanner (Full House)
Ken Titus (Titus; short-lived sitcom, but the character was very memorable)
Rosanne Conner (Roseanne)
Fred Sanford (Sanford and Son)
Do I need to go on?
list is good but incomplete . I can’t find Chandler Bing ( Matthew Perry ) from F.r.i.E.n.D.s .
Missed the great characters from the Larry Sanders Show, Hank “Hey Now” Kingsley and Artie
This is insane, Putting Sheldon Cooper and Barney Stinson in the Top 10 when they have yet to complete their respective series. While both characters are indeed good, they are both far from top 10, at the moment atleast.
No Al Bundy or George Costanza? Joey Tribbiani is on the list? out of everybody in Friends, Joey is your pick?
Also, while creating a Top 50 is most definetly difficult, there is no excuse for weak explanations, that dont even explain why the character got the spot you gave them. It just seems like a random order of your personal favorites with very little thought put behind the article.
Please WhatCulture.com, If you have any respect for your own reputation, you will not let these kind of weak lists, with poor text and terrible order, be posted on your website.
