8. The Past Troubles Of Supporting Characters
To kick us off is the granddaddy of issues with Dexter. The supporting cast are really quite disposable. Did you really feel all that affected when Deb shot LaGuerta at the end of season seven? Sure, it was a huge moment for Deb. But by that point I was so underwhelmed with the predictable finale that I wasnt really concerned. I could see what the writers were trying to do. They wanted to replicate the success of the Doakes storyline from season two. But the problem is that LaGuerta just isnt nearly as interesting as Doakes. In fact, I find her downright annoying. I was actually rooting for Deb to pull the trigger at the end of that episode, just to shut her up. If theres anything weve learned so far, its that the supporting cast are given the short end of the stick. As enjoyable as season seven was, you cant ignore that the writers wasted hours of our time on Quinns story arc; just to have it all work out conveniently with no real consequences for anybody. Does anybody remember when Batista was married to LaGuerta? I wont be surprised if that plot point is completely ignored in the wake of her death. And this is one thing I expect wont be changing in the next season. Expect Quinn to be up to some sort of ridiculous, unrelated nonsense. At least the writers have resisted resorting to a cheap character arc like, say, having Batista quit Miami Metro and buy a restaurant right?
