BBCBBCAnd with that, Doctor Who has finally tackled the big hitter of British folklore. Robin Hood and his merry men are now a part of Doctor Who with all the clichés of the ballads and stories played right to the hilt. Well except for the robots and the cyborg Sherriff of Nottingham. And it€™s surprising that it took so long for the programme to get round to it since Robin Hood€™s place in English mythology is so strong. More surprising though is that the approach to Robin Hood was to make him entirely real within the Whoniverse. Which is very rarely done with the myths and legends used in Doctor Who. An occasionally visited concept from Classic Who that the revival has picked up and run miles with is the idea of alien intervention influencing human mythology. In recent years, the Doctor has encountered and battled against (among other things) witches, vampires, a werewolf, and even Satan himself. Except not quite. All four of those and several others were alien in origin and created the myths recorded by man. And since human history spans millions of years (though most of it unrecorded), there are dozens more tales for the Doctor Who writing staff to pull out of folklore... and make into slightly different stories. And these are ten of them...
