Doctor Who: 10 Terrifying Moments In Under The Lake

An episode that proved to be one of Doctor Who's most scary stories yet...

After the dramatic events of The Magician's Apprentice and The Witch's Familiar, Doctor Who gave audiences something different this week - a terrifying tale of ghosts in an underwater base that harked back to the chills and thrills of Patrick Troughton's 'base under siege' stories that Doctor Who did so well.

Toby Whitehouse produced a script that was as creepy and scary as some of his best work on Being Human and there were plenty of moments to shock, scare and raise the hairs on the back of your neck this week. In fact, it was so terrifying in places that there is a strong argument that this is one story the younger Doctor Who audience should not be watching.

With moments straight out of a horror movie, Under The Lake continued to standard of storytelling we have seen in series nine so far and built on the scares of episodes like Kill The Moon and Mummy On The Orient Express last season.

10. Moran Returns From The Dead

Audiences had already caught their first glimpse of Paul Kaye's Victorian Gentleman-style ghost onboard the ship but it wasn't until the terrified crew started running for their lives that they - and the audience - got their first proper look at the ghosts stalking them.

Having died just a moment earlier, Moran's appearance in the corridor is chilling. Black chasms where his eyes should be and shrouded in a misty glow, he looks the stuff of nightmares. And while audiences will have seen his ghost plenty of times in the trailer, seeing him appear for the most time is the first of many chills Under The Lake presented.
