Every Doctor Who Finale - Ranked Worst To Best

10. Death In Heaven (Season 8)

Doctor Who Finales
BBC Studios

Perhaps the biggest issue with this finale is how much of it is wasted potential. The reveal of Missy as a new incarnation of The Master was a groundbreaking moment that was enhanced by Michelle Gomez's fantastic rendition of the classic character. The dialogue was fantastic and a lot of the action and imagery was great. However, some of the finale was so convoluted and tacked on that it dragged down an otherwise great episode.

While the main villain of the episode was Missy, she lacked the significant threat of many other villains. The Cybermen were seemingly only brought in for this reason, much like the Toclafane from The Master's first appearance. As well as this, while the dialogue is well written the plot itself is incredibly confusing with many inconsistencies. The addition of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart was a touching addition, but having him play such a pivotal role would likely have confused audiences given that he hadn't appeared for decades.

Capaldi and Gomez deserved so much more from their first finale but unfortunately, a poor script kept them from reaching their true potential. This was a bad omen of things to come from Moffat and eventually Chris Chibnall.
