For eight years, over eight seasons and 73 episodes, Game of Thrones shook the world and proved that the night was indeed dark and full of terrors. Perhaps the biggest phenomenon in TV history, the fantasy-drama's impact on the world has been close to unrivalled, despite being complete for nearly two years now.

Throughout the show, fans revelled in the family drama, the violence, the wars, and the twists, saying goodbye to countless characters along the way and coming up with their own theories about how the epic would come to an end.

The final season may have been divisive amongst fans, but even without it Game of Thrones had very little to prove, and thanks to the great characters it brought to life, it will forever be one of the greats of TV.

With that in mind, here are all the main characters of Game of Thrones, ranked worst to best. Only those who appear in the opening credits will be included. Major spoilers throughout.

Whilst Game of T is known for creating brilliant, fully-formed antagonists, Viserys Targaryen was nothing more than a whiny, self-entitled, vengeful narcissist who thought that everything would go his way no matter what. Yes, his family was killed and he lived his life as an outcast, but the most interesting part of his character was his death at the hands of Khal Drogo, which was as poetic as it was brutal.
