Gimli and Tyrion are vastly opposing dwarves between the series' with one based on brain, and the other on brawn.

The Lord of the Rings dwarves are spoken of like a more cynical race, sticking to their gloomy mines and industrial lives, bitter towards the dwarves and keeping themselves to themselves. Gimli breaks the mould, forging an alliance with Legolas that quickly turns into a beautiful friendship, with the kill count forever rising between them.

On the other side, Tyrion is a far more cunning individual. He could single-handedly plot a city's downfall or it's security, as demonstrated against Stannis' fleet, and while he's been caught up in several battles, he's not an out-and-out soldier.

Gimli would take the round on fighting ability, even if his brain doesn't match that of the Lannister's, and despite the fact that Tyrion is the master of burrowing his way out of extremely tricky situations.
