While characters like Doctor Manhatten and Rorschach serve as highlights behind the original classic graphic novel, they aren't the sole reason why it works so well. After all, every character is crafted to discuss another element of human nature, both the morally gray and reprehensible side of it. Every member of the story has something going on under the surface and considering Damon Lindelof's ability to write characters this way (Lost and The Leftovers illustrate this fact), any original personalities will follow suit.
