The Simpsons: 10 Most Memorably Heartfelt Moments

The greatest trick of comedy is when it makes you cry, and few do it better than Matt Groening.

The Simpsons had a very different feel in its first ten seasons than in its last fifteen. Though the show we see today can provide a quick laugh or Family Guy-esque antics, the show€™s earlier run contained episodes that had heart as well as comedy. It was far from preachy (particularly if you ask a certain First Lady of America during the late 80s) but The Simpsons contained many truly heartfelt moments that would make you think, reconsider your priorities, or even shed a tear. Comedy inevitably has the potential be just as emotionally fulfilling as drama, because what makes us laugh can reveal just as much about ourselves as what makes us cry. These moments in Simpsons history are what make the series not just a comedy show, but a work of art.

10. Lisa On Ice (6x08) - A Hug Between Rivals

When Bart and Lisa are pitted against each other in separate hockey teams, a rivalry is quickly formed between the two. Lisa finds that she has the hidden talents of a goalie, and Bart can't help but feel jealous that she has both academic and athletic skill. Homer encourages their sibling rivalry, becoming one of "those parents" who puts too much emphasis on their children's competitiveness. Before the pivotal match between the two teams Homer proclaims, "Don't go easy on each other just because you're brother and sister. I want to see you both fighting for your parents' love!" This spurs both siblings to play rough against each other, up until Bart is faced with a penalty shot towards Lisa's goal that could win the game. But as they stare at each other, they each remember times when they bonded as brother and sister. The two abandon their hockey gear and skate towards each other into a hug. Though Homer and the seats full of parents don't react well to the gesture, the moment is a sweet one and is a notable part of Simpsons history.
