The Super Friends have arrived!

Supergirl S4 Ups Downs 13
The CW

Contains spoilers from Supergirl Season 4, Episode 13.

After a yet another hiatus, Supergirl finally made its return to The CW this week for the latest installment of its fourth season.

In keeping with the season's overarching theme, 'What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way?' was a highly-politicised encounter that saw Kara clash with the President of the United States over his recent conduct regarding his vision for making America safe from outside threats (take from that what you will). However, it also took the rivalry between Supergirl and Agent Liberty in a new direction by introducing some new players in the form of Manchester Black's colourful new group The Elite.

Though Kara would find herself caught between a rock and a hard place, it presented her with the opportunity to turn to her Super Friends for back up and, in doing so, highlighted how some of the show's lesser-appreciated characters can be real assets when allowed to be.

On the surface, 'What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way?' was an enjoyable comic book-inspired adventure, but underneath, it was an incredibly well-executed outing that gave even the minor stories a real purpose.

First, the positives.
