Most of our readers here just asked themselves, “What the heck is Supernatural?” And here I am saying to myself, “Hopefully I can find those 3 Supernatural fans on this site.”
Since most people don’t know what the show is about, let me explain. Supernatural is a cult hit show about two brothers, named Sam and Dean Winchester, who hunt down and kill the monsters in your closet, the things that go bump in the night, the ghosts, the ghouls, the scary, the creepy, and clowns. The show starts off with their mother, Mary Winchester, being killed by a mysterious man when Dean was 4 and Sam was a baby. Their father, John Winchester learns of the supernatural existence, learns how to hunt and kill them, and takes his kids on the road to teach them how to hunt. Years later the family is shattered. But one day John goes missing, and Sam and Dean reunite to search for him.
Its fan base is made up of the most devoted fans you will ever see for a show, well, maybe except for Star Trek. Without it’s loyal fans, the show would have never seen its eighth season it is currently in. Supernatural is one of my favorite shows ever and its co-lead, Jensen Ackles, is my man crush.
This list is going to be tough for me because I’m always alternating episodes. Originally I was going to write 25 episodes but I will save that until the shows conclusion. So here it is, the Top 10 Episodes of Supernatural So Far:

No episodes from Season 6/7?
I’d definitely go with the episode where Bobby died.
YAY! thank you for showing some soup-natch love
Nice list. I was a bit suprised that u didnt have any from season 3, 6 or 7. I liked A SPN Christmas. It had the best brotherly moments on the show. I think its impossible for me to list just 10. I have too many favourites I guess. I liked Faith, Tall Tales, Nightshifter, Yellow Fever, In The End, Hello Cruel World and so many more. I’ll wait to read ur top 25 and see if it matches mine.
Mystery Spot and No Rest for the Wicked are both season 3 :). You’re right about 6 and 7 though. Personally I find season 7 much better than 4, 5 and 6.
Sorry. That was oversight :) Only 6 and 7 were missing. I agree with u on season 7 too. It may be too early to say this but I have a feeling season 8 may be better than the past few seasons. I’m loving it so far. Purgatory scenes are awesome. I love the color contrast and Jensen is hitting it out of the park with his portrayal of PTSD Dean.
I love this list and it mirrors mine closely, although I agree with SPN Fan that its difficult to narrow down a list when there are so many great episodes. However, there are a couple significant errors that will stand out to fans: Dean’s amulet was not a gift from his mother – it was a gift from Sam when they were children, as shown in a flashback in season 3′s “a Very Supernatural Christmas.” It is proven to be a meaningful symbol of Sam and Dean’s relationship in season 5. Also, SPN’s continuation beyond season 5 was not decided by the network against Eric Kripke’s wishes. He passed the role of show runner on to Sera Gamble because he was developing other projects, but remains as executive producer and a strong supporter of the show.
Despite these errors, I really enjoyed the list and the summaries – thanks!
Ah I forgot about the Amulet being given to Dean by Sam. Thank you for reminding me.
As for Season 5, I was always told and read that the show was only supposed to last 5 seasons. I was always told that Kripke left because of the show being renewed for a sixth season.
Great list man, I love all of those episodes, well… I love all the episodes really. “Hey, Tuesday, pig ‘n a poke!” Is such a great line. I also have “Hey, assbutt!” as my text tone!
Great list. No doubt in the No 1 on the list. Would have been nice to have more castiel moments though.
i like your top 10, & totally understand your man crush, jensen has that effect on everybody, (well apart hardcore sam fans lol) you’ll be surprised if you read the comments under the videos related to him on youtube, straight men say would go gay & gay women have 2nd thoughts, i know many actors but none has that confusing effect on people
I agree with most of your choices, but I have to say you got some of your information wrong. Graicea got it right. I’m surprised you didn’t include any episodes past season 5. Season 7′s “Death’s Door” is even better than some you listed, and is the favorite episode of them all, according to both Jared and Jensen.
Apologies if anyone else picked upon this, but the amulet Dean wears was given to him at Christmas (won’t spoil) by Sam. It is fondly known as the “Samulet.” Keep an eye on it.
See, you found more than 3 SPN fans!
“And I can already hear half the fans sharpening their pitch forks.”
LOL, yup, I’m one of those fans- sorry! I did like the rest of your list, though. You picked some awesome episodes!
I’d also heard that Kripke was pretty adamant about having wanted to stop at the end of season 5. He’d said as much in many, many prior interviews and I’d always thought it was odd the way he pulled back so completely from the show after the renewal was announced. No PR before his big finale, no attending the 100th party, not even writing the actual story for “Swan Song.” It’s been since confirmed by at least 3 cast members that Kripke had indeed intended both brothers to say yes and save the world together- an ending I would have preferred since they both played a part in starting the apocalypse in the first place. Oh well, them’s the breaks.
Swan Song and Mystery Spot top my list. Swan Song is so heart breaking no matter how many times I see it. The combination of humor and sorrow is what makes me love this so above all others.
Good list and tough to do! A couple I would have added would be The End, Skin and Faith which battles for the number 1 spot with Swan Song for me. Faith was a turning point in the mythology of the show, it’s a great episode.
Thanks so much for the article. It’s the best show ever and I share your crush on Jensen :)
Like I said in my article, I originally was going to have 25 episodes instead of 10. 25-10 has The Born-Again Identity, Death’s Door, and The French Mistake from Seasons 6-7. When the show is over I will update my list and add 25-10. I might even try a bigger list then 25, possibly 30 or more episodes.
Thanks for all your comments and I will try to respond back.
This page has been viewed over 12,000 times and am sure atleast half of them will be fans. So u will definitely get more than 3 :)
I liked ur list though I have to agree with SPN Fan and SweetonDean that Faith, The End and a few more would make it to my list. But the funny thing is I dont know which ones to remove from urs. So my list will just end up being longer I guess :)
As much as I am enjoying Season 8 so far, reading your summary of the last episode of season 5 has reminded me of just how perfect it was. Part of me wishes it had ended there just because of how well it wrapped things up. Yes, it was extremely bitter sweet but that’s art sometimes. Still hoping that they can manage to wrap season 8 up with the same level of awesome. I’m hoping that we might catch a glimpse of God or something.
Also I’d add the episode where Bobby died last season. Extremely poignant and gave the best view of their adoptive parent-child relationship. The best episode of season 8 so far for me has been the episode focusing on Benny’s past. I’m really liking Benny and thinking he is one of the best parts of the new season.
Looking forward to your next list!
Amazing choices! I’m a Supernatural fan since I can’t even remember and I agree with all of your choices :) I really want you to make a list of the 10 greatest episodes between season 6 and season 8. Even though these seasons are not my favorites. And please do more Supernatural posts, it is so hard to find fans like me, and for your choices I think we think(haha) the same!
Great list for a awesome show! Just a few things I wanted to comment on: #9 Abandon All Hope – Season 5, I like the picture you chose cause it was hard enough with Ellen and Jo’s death but Dean burning that picture at the end of the episode made their deaths that much worse. #8 Dark Side of the Moon – Season 5, Another great thing about that episode is we get to see Ash and Pam again. #5 What is and What Should Never Be – Season 2, I don’t think Dean wishes for no knowledge of monsters or demons cause later in the episode you see him reading articles that reference past hunts and when he is talking to his father’s grave he start off saying that everyone that they had saved are dead. #2 All Hell Breaks Loose – Season 2, I could be wrong but I thought Dean shot Azazel in between the eyes not the heart. I’m terrible at remembering the names of episodes but the one episode I would add to your next list is the episode where Dean goes back in time and meets young Mary and John, a lot of great stuff happens: Dean talks John into passing on the VW van for the Impala, we find out that Mary’s father and maybe her mother are hunters and they are who Sam & Dean are named after, and most importantly we find out why Sam was chosen to become one of Azazel’s special kids.
Thank you for your comment. Dean did shoot Azazel in the heart. You can see it here.

As for the Dean going back in time episode, that will be in my list when the show is over. It is extremely important to the show. I even talk about the Back to the Future references.
Thank you for setting me straight on Azazel’s death.
A significant oversight in the last post is that Sam’s plunge into Lucifer’s cage with Michael does not start the Apocalypse, it in fact ends it as the Apocalypse started with Lucifer rising in the season four finale entitled “Lucifer Rising”, which provoked the pursuit of Michael for a suitable vessel to combat Lucifer in a war that would end mankind. Season 6 then focuses on a civil war in heaven and a liberated albeit soulless Sam.
Interesting to hear that the series was planned to wrap up after Season 5 as i think since then there has been a slight dip in the quality of episodes, partly due to lack of original ideas and unchartered territory, but still highly watchable for seasoned fans of the show.
Wednesday’s episode was the best in years – I’ve been a fan since day dot – and I have to say – having a Golem is one thing I didn’t think of – but it worked so well and I can’t wait to see where the whole thing goes… BRILLIANT!!!
assbutt still gives me the giggles! Best casting ever – Misha!
