The Handmaid's Tale Season 2: 7 Ups & 3 Downs From 'Seeds'

6. Aunt Lydia Vs. Serena

Both Lydia and Serena have made June's life a misery, and yet they've both been there to support her at different times. In the first season, when Lydia started hitting June, Serena interfered to protect her handmaid. Granted, this was because she thought June was pregnant, but we still felt a modicum of gratitude towards the Waterford mistress.

In this week's episode, we found ourselves rooting for Lydia, as this power struggle between the two women waged on. Lydia noticed the change in June almost immediately. The handmaid's silence — as well as her anything-but-cheery disposition — was reason enough for Lydia to fear for her mental state. Lydia questioned Serena's care of June, reminding her that she needs to support June emotionally as well as physically, because any sort of distress could affect the baby.

This is the special thing about The Handmaid's Tale. There are no sides. There are no heroes or villains. Everyone is doing what they think is best. But, as Commander Waterford so aptly put it in the first season, best doesn't always mean better for everyone.
