The Handmaid's Tale Season 2: 7 Ups & 3 Downs From 'Seeds'
5. Nick's Impromptu Marriage
Despite Lydia's request for Serena to look out for June, her psychological torture tactics towards her handmaid reached new heights later in the episode. In an attempt to cheer June up, she took her to the "prayvaganza." The people in Gilead really know how to have a good time, huh?
While at the event, Gilead's founding fathers honored the brave men who protect them. Nick and all the other security guards came on stage. In appreciation of all the men's hard work, they bestowed a wife upon each of them — just another example of how Gilead sees women as possessions. Of course, June was heartbroken, but she attempted to maintain that stern Offred-style expression. Serena toyed with June, commenting on how handsome Nick looked.
Make no mistake: this was a punishment. Earlier in the episode, Serena told Nick that the handmaid was "not his concern," so she's clearly getting worried about the relationship between the two. Moreover, Commander Waterford has begun to suspect Nick, so this marriage sorts all of the Waterfords' problems.
