The Walking Dead: 10 Best Episodes

1. Pretty Much Dead Already (S2 E8)

The Walking Dead No Way Out
AMC

Many of the entries on this list have been celebrations of shock, action or drama, but the mid-season finale of season two is a triumph of storytelling yet to be bettered in TWD.

The search for Sophia plot was stretched out across half a season and the showrunners’ patience with it paid dividends with a devastating payoff in Pretty Much Dead Already.

When Shane sees that Hershel is trying to heal the dead by storing them inside a barn on the farm, he releases the locks to unload a group of walkers, including deceased members of the Greene family, which the group kill in front of a horrified Hershel. Last to emerge is Carol’s zombified daughter, forcing Rick to pull the trigger in a moment of morbid reality.

The Sophia storyline served as a catalyst for the animosity between Rick and Shane, and as the basis for the special bond between Carol and Daryl. It developed characters and pushed the series to new levels of depression, just when life on the farm had given it hope.

Difficult to watch, and yet completely unmissable; exactly what TWD should be.
