"Just look at the flowers."

This was the furthest that TWD has pushed the psychological challenges of living in a post-apocalyptic world. Fearing for the safety of Judith, herself and Tyrese on the road to Terminus, Carol is forced to shoot Lizzie, after she murdered her younger sister Mika.

Lizzie was some dark eyeshadow and a long white dress away from being one of those creepy horror movie girls, but it was her innocence of youth that made her so dangerous and that is why the viewers felt every bit of anguish on Carol’s face as she pulled the trigger. She could not separate the living from the dead; her mind distorted by her surroundings.

Melissa McBride's character of Carol has undergone the biggest transformation since the start of the series, and in season four she became an architect of necessary evil. She also killed Karen and David to stop the prison fever spreading, a sin which she sorrowfully confessed to Tyreese in this episode, and one that was forgiven by her new partner in repent.

With the group split up into several factions, this was the last of them which was expected to deliver such distressing drama, but McBride carried the episode on her shoulders.
