RAW August 15th 2005

Leading up to SummerSlam on August 21st 2005 and his once-in-a-lifetime match, legend versus legend, with Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels was feeling a little retro. He hadn’t played a full-fledged heel for years because his newly Christian perspective meant that it didn’t come as naturally as it had in his politicking, substance-abusing, bad boy days.

At least that’s what Michaels liked to tell himself. The truth of the matter was that when Hogan leaned on Vince McMahon to get the match he wanted - his cliched babyface Hulk persona versus a heel Heartbreak Kid - he got a lot more than he’d bargained for. The old Michaels might have been dead and gone, but the reconstructed version still had a little of the devil in him.

In the weeks building up to the big match, Hogan would routinely complain to McMahon that Michaels had gone too far again: that he was heeling too hard, his promos a little too on the nose. But on the last RAW before SummerSlam, it wasn’t Hogan that the Heartbreak Kid would be taking liberties with.

On August 15th 2005, RAW had come to Montreal… and Shawn Michaels was persona non grata there.

From that first little strut as he dances to his own music on the apron to the massive sh*teating grin as he spins in the ring to a deafening chorus of boos, you can tell that he’s loving every second. What follows is a masterclass in crowd psychology, as Michaels gleefully plays with the one crowd on earth that hates his guts.
