Cena vs. Hogan could have happened. It would have likely been terrible from an in-ring perspective, but it was possible, and it would have made a lot of money.

After all, Hogan faced off against Orton at SummerSlam 2006 in his final match in the company. By that point, Cena was already the top star in WWE and main-evented the show against Edge. Vince McMahon could have booked a massive battle of top babyfaces from different generations for the show if he wanted to. He went a different direction.

Perhaps SummerSlam should have been the night for Cena and Hogan to have locked up. The prior year Hogan and Michaels had their legends match at the show of the summer, and it was one of the most memorable matches of the year. It was a bit of a trainwreck due to Michael's’ over-the-top selling, but it was still a fun match. Orton/Hogan just didn’t reach that level of intrigue, and it was a bit silly that Hogan went over on a guy nearly 30 years younger than him.

If they had switched out Orton for Cena, they could have had a Hogan/Rock like match, and just had the two showboat for most of the fight while hitting their trademark moves. The crowd would have gone crazy.

At this point in time, the biggest star of the 2000s isn’t going to step in the ring against the biggest star of the 80s. Combined, their age is over 100, and Hogan couldn’t take an Attitude Adjustment without the entire world fearing for his life. Still, that didn’t stop The Hulkster from trying to make this match happen just a couple years ago.

It would have been a bit of work to make this showdown happen at all, but there’s not doubt that it would have been one of the most talked about encounters of this millennium.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
