10 Brilliant Things From Late WCW

4. Booker T Wins The Gold

The way Booker T won the WCW Heavyweight Title was far from ideal. But still, it was long overdue and a genuine pleasure to see him finally rewarded after being looked over for so long.

At Bash at the Beach 2000, Hulk Hogan was set to battle Jeff Jarrett. But then, they delivered an infamous screwjob that night. Double J laid down for The Hulkster and then Hogan swore on the mic. Vince Russo came out later and was incredibly upset. He tossed in a few swear words as well, and then promised fans a new main event. He gave us Jarrett vs. Booker T for the big gold belt.

It was a good, though not spectacular match, but seeing Booker holding the title at the end of a pay-per-view just felt right. The next night on Nitro was his big opportunity, and he cut a solid, humble babyface promo. It wasn’t filled with catchphrases and yelling, it was just a man grateful for finally reaching the top after being overlooked for years in favor of lazier, less exciting guys a decade or more older than him.

We could use more moments like that in wrestling.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
