The hotly-anticipated WWE Championship showdown had finally arrived, and Austin and Undertaker were raring to deliver a monumental performance worthy of all the hype. Austin in particular wanted the match to be memorable, and then wound up barely remembering a damn thing.

While not as bad as his horrific injury one SummerSlam earlier, Austin ended up being knocked loopy after an early botch. Charging off the ropes, Austin kicked a hunched-over Undertaker in the gut. In response, 'Taker stood up straight, and his noggin whacked Austin right in the chin.

According to Austin, he was knocked out for about two or three seconds, and Earl Hebner had to clue the groggy champion in to the fact that he was in Madison Square Garden, working the main event of SummerSlam. The rest of the match was foggy to the reigning titleholder, who does remember the bump through the table at ringside, but little else from the remainder of the contest.
