10 Greatest Ladder Matches In WWE History

Taking a look at one of the most iconic stipulations in all of wrestling.

The ladder match is the perfect stipulation for wrestling. It has simple rules and a clear aim, as well as a natural sense of tension and danger.

Under the wrong circumstances, ladder matches can become poorly-structured, clumsy disappointments. However, in the right hands, the stipulation has led to some of the best matches in WWE history. From ultra-intense blow-off matches to multi-man car crash affairs, ladder matches can help add an extreme edge to a wide variety of bouts - whether used as a focal point of storytelling, or simply something high to jump off.

The stipulation has also transformed the careers of many WWE superstars, forever tying them to its own legacy. Men like Shawn Michaels, Edge, and Jeff Hardy will always be fondly thought of when remembering the greats of this particular match-type.

It's time to look at the very best ladder matches in WWE history, from the invention of the stipulation in the early '90s to present day. It's important to note that I won't be including TLC or Money In The Bank contests - only those officially classed as ladder matches - otherwise there'd be far too much to choose from.

10. Bret Hart Vs. Shawn Michaels - WWF Wrestling Challenge

Many people believe the first ladder match in WWE history to be the Razor/HBK classic at WrestleMania X, but it actually came two years prior at a relatively small taping of 'WWF Wrestling Challenge' in Portland, Maine.

Michaels was in this match too, but his opponent was none other than Bret Hart. The Hitman has since expressed dissatisfaction with his appearance in the de facto prototype of the stipulation, given the far greater notoriety of the 'Mania match.

Although seen by few, and slightly disjointed (a forgivable offence, given its status as the first WWE ladder match ever), it feels appropriate to kick the list off with this bout. It is the true pioneer of a now-beloved stipulation.

In the end, a babyface Bret was able to subdue Shawn and retain his Intercontinental Championship.
