10 Most Damaging WWE Defeats

9. John Cena Over Damien Sandow

John Cena appears in three of the matches featured on this list, which is perhaps to paint an inaccurate impression about his overall proclivity for burying opponents. While it's undeniable that he tends to go over more often than not, he's also helped the likes of CM Punk, Kevin Owens and AJ Styles reach the WWE promised land.

In contrast to that, however, there's also cases like Damien Sandow, who in October 2013 attempted to make real his wrestling ambitions by cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase against Big Match John - a Big Match John, incidentally, who 24 hours earlier had been put through the ringer at Hell in a Cell (evidenced by his bandaged-up arm).

To compound matters, it wasn't even a proper match. Sandow feigned disinterest in cashing in his title shot before attacking his would-be opponent from behind, pounding his patched-up arm with the briefcase before ordering the referee to call for the bell. Under those conditions, there could surely have been only one outcome.

And yet, somehow, Cena fought back to retain his title, humiliating the man who dared to challenge him in the process. It was necessary in the sense that WWE needed the belt on one of its biggest stars ahead of December's unification bout, but a truly horrid way to treat Sandow, who never really managed to recover.
