10 No-Win WWE Situations

9. Rey Mysterio's 2006 Push

Of all the failed WWE pushes over the years, it is Rey Mysterio's in 2006 that one looks back on with the most regret. His disappointing world title reign means that fans are apt to forget about the many amazing things he accomplished before and after it.

Equally, it's hard not to point to this as his sliding doors moment. In having the Ultimate Underdog win the Royal Rumble, you see, WWE was essentially putting itself in a no-win situation at WrestleMania, with both outcomes - for various reasons - being potentially harmful.

Kurt Angle retaining the bet, or worse, Randy Orton stealing it, would have almost certainly been the end of Mysterio as a main event-level wrestler. Virtually everyone else who has won the January show-piece, after all, has gone onto collect their prize on the Grandest Stage of Them All.

Rey winning, however - the option they settled on - only invited mean-spirited accusations that the company was capitalising on the real-life death of Eddie Guerrero, whom Rey had referenced all throughout his run to the top of the card. They faced both a moral dilemma and a business one - and there was no way of winning.
