10 Reasons You Should Be Watching New Japan Pro Wrestling

5. The Main Events

New Japan shows tend to be split into two halves. The first is often packed with multi-man tag matches and - on the larger shows like Wrestle Kingdom - the less important titles. These tend to be spectacles, which might set up one or two storylines for the future, but in the grand scheme of things aren’t that important.

The second half of the show is a different matter entirely. New Japan knows how to do main events, and they tend to deliver accordingly. Just look at this year’s Wrestle Kingdom. While everyone has been caught up in praising Okada vs. Omega (and rightfully so), it came on the back of an incredible run of different matches. In any other year, Goto vs. Shibata, Takahashi vs. Kushida or Naito vs. Tanahashi would have stolen the show.

New Japan makes these matches feel important. Unlike WWE, every belt is treated with respect - as if it is something worth putting your life on the line for. They also bring their own unique styles, from the hard hitting NEVER Openweight Championship to the high-flying Junior Heavyweight Championship.

If you miss main events that mean something, then New Japan is the place for you.
