Back in the early years of SummerSlam, the event took place on Monday nights. On August 26th, 1991, WWE presented arguably the greatest SummerSlam to not feature a WWE Championship defense.

Earlier in 1991, the first half of WrestleMania VII featured some great in-ring action headlined by the Career Ending Match between the Macho King and Ultimate Warrior. The second half would go down hill and compared to the developments of SummerSlam '91, it was an inferior show.

In front of an incredibly hot crowd, SummerSlam '91 featured an instant classic for the Intercontinental Championship as Mr. Perfect passed the torch to Bret "Hitman" Hart, setting up his legendary singles run. Also, the rarely defended Million Dollar Championship changed hands, and the Legion Of Doom won the tag titles becoming the first and only team ever to hold the NWA, AWA, and now WWF Tag Team Championships.

The Match Made In Heaven and the Match Made In Hell weren't much to speak of considering they were the main events, but they didn't drag the show down.

With '91 being considered one of the best SummerSlams ever, there's not much debate that it was a better overall show than WrestleMania VII.
