NJPW has borrowed a page from the WWE playbook in recent years by staging a pre-show battle royal to kick-off its annual January show-piece (though it is more about nostalgia and comedy than sign-posting the company's next big push).

However, at Wrestle Kingdom 12 they also booked a gauntlet match for the six-man tag team straps, a decision that allowed pretty much everyone on their roster to get on the show - in a meaningful, high-stakes bout.

This is one area where WrestleMania sometimes disappoints: anyone who doesn't have their own storyline is simply chucked in the Andre the Giant free-for-all, which is great for whomever wins but not so great for those who get dumped out without throwing a punch.

Introducing six-man straps into WWE would be pointless; they simply don't have enough stables to pull if off. But they do have two sets of tag team belts - and booking both a classic, two-on-two feud for one and a chaotic multi-man match for the other is the perfect way to ensure everyone gets their moment.
