2. HLA - Hot Lesbian Action
Although this wasn’t a gimmick or character assigned to one specific wrestler, it’s impossible to write the words ‘worst’, ‘women’ and ‘wrestling’ in a sentence without then picturing HLA, or ‘Hot Lesbian Action’.
Once again,
none of the blame for this one lies with the female performers in question, who
were given a short straw and asked to drink through it. HLA was
the brainchild of Eric Bischoff - although it’s fair to say he was probably
doing most of his thinking with a different organ when he devised the segment.
In an attempt to counter SmackDown’s equally bizarre and wrongheaded ‘gay wedding’ between Chuck and Billy, Raw GM Bischoff attempted to create controversy (and thus cash) by convincing two half-naked women make-out with each other in the middle of a WWE ring.
Emerging from a dressing room labelled ‘Lesbians’ (yes, really), independent wrestlers Savvy Sasha and Looney Lane walked to the ring holding hands, while Jerry Lawler screamed his head off at the prospect of ‘HLA’.
Lawler would continue to gawk at the pair through a pair of binoculars, as Bischoff encouraged them to undress and kiss each other with all the believability of a soft-core porn actor. The HLA segment turned out to be a setup, a way for Bischoff to get his jollies before 3 Minute Warning crashed the party, superkicking and gorilla-pressing the humiliated ‘Lesbians’.
The whole segment plays out like a bizarre fever dream today - the sort of thing that you misremember watching on late night TV after accidently skipping past the family friendly channels.
