10 WWE Fake News Stories We All Believed

You are fake news!

The phrase "Fake News" has become common parlance since it was popularised by Donald Trump during his US election campaign, and whilst it may be a novelty for some, wresting fans are long used to it.

Apocryphal WWE rumours have been around for as long as there has been a WWE, and whilst many of them can be dismissed, off-hand, as soon as they surface, one or two of them stick.

This SummerSlam weekend, for example, reports that The Undertaker was in Brooklyn fueled speculation that he hadn't, in fact, retired at WrestleMania and was set for yet another comeback.

Spoiler alert: he didn't show up. If he was in the Big Apple at all, he was probably just was there as a fan, or perhaps to see some familiar faces in the back (or, who knows, maybe just sight-seeing?).

There isn't really any motivation for WWE to kill a rumour like that, though. Given that it hasn't come from them (at least not officially), they can't be held responsible if it turns out to be bogus, and at the same time it probably doesn't hurt last minute Network subscriptions.

10. Hulk Hogan At WrestleMania 33

For all its marquee matches, WrestleMania 33 felt - to some - a little light on star-power.

In practice, that just meant there was no Stone Cold (so far as we could tell), and no Rock, who - despite his Hollywood commitments - had become a part of the furniture in recent years.

Rumours duly began circulating that Hulk Hogan had been offered the chance to plug the legend gap, and considering how well WWE sneaked the Hardys into the building, you couldn't totally rule out an appearance from the Hulkster until the closing pyro.

But, of course, he didn't show. He's still in the dog house, as far as mainstream wrestling goes, after that leaked recording surfaced two years ago, and things don't look particularly likely to change any time soon.
